Electrical Safety

Have you ever stopped and took a look around your home to find out how many frayed or worn down electrical codes you are using?

The Bella Vista Fire Department would like to recommend the following:

Never keep extension cords that are cut or damaged. Replace as so as possible.

Make sure plugs fit tightly into the receptacles. Sparks could arc between the contacts and cause a fire.

Never use an extension cord as permanent wiring as it could heat up and break down possibly causing a fire.

Never run extension cords under carpet or rugs or over a heated surface as it can cause the insulated covering to break down.

Never cut or file off the prongs on a cord in order to fit into an older style outlet.

Only use cords that are UL approved.

Never use electrical cords as a clothes line as this could stretch the cord causing it to weaken.

If using an extension cord outside make sure that you purchase a cord specifically marked for such use.

If you have any doubts with regards to wiring, contact a qualified electrician.
