Fire: The Cold Facts

A fire is capable of creating toxic smoke and gases. If you smell smoke, see flames or are awakened by your smoke alarm, stay calm and get everyone out of the home immediately. During a fire, and if you encounter smoke, remember that the air is best near the floor. Get down on your hands and knees and crawl to an exit. It is a good idea to have a pre-arranged meeting place out front of your home in the event of a fire. If a fire occurs, go there and take attendance to be sure that no one is left inside.

Once you are outside, notify the fire department from a neighbors house using 9-1-1. Give the complete address of the emergency and dont hang up until the call taker obtains all the necessary information. Be sure that no one goes back inside the building for any reason.

Tell the firefighters if anyone is trapped inside the building.
